During this fall and winter, the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society and NCTV Channel 79 will present “Women Leaders of New Canaan: Celebrating the Legacy of the 19th Amendment” in honor of the centennial of women’s right to vote.
Recorded interviews and related articles will showcase the achievements of a diverse group of women leaders who are the beneficiaries of the struggle for women’s emancipation and recognition that began in 1848 and continues today.
Meredith Bach, Director of Marketing at RAND Insurance and President of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, will conduct the interviews which will air daily on NCTV79 at 10am, 3pm and 7pm, and on-line at NCTV79.org, and will also be available on the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society website at www.nchistory.org. Articles on each woman will appear in the Museum’s newsletters and available on the website. New episodes will run every two weeks and the entire series will be archived at the Museum.

These women have given tirelessly to improving life in New Canaan. They are lawyers, architects and artists, corporate executives and teachers. They run businesses, government agencies and non-profit institutions. They have founded social justice organizations, raised hundreds of millions of dollars for medical research. They head groups to alleviate suffering, empower girls and help seniors and survivors of abuse.
These New Canaan change makers stand on the shoulders of giants: Barb Achenbaum, Staying Put; Dede Bartlett, New Canaan Abuse Prevention Partnership; Christa Carr, The Glass House; Indira Christie, Entrepreneur; Mary Fetchet, Founder of Voices of 911; Marilyn Ford, Quinnipiac Law School; Kathy Giusti, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation; Lori Marcus, Corporate Director; Amanda Martocchio, Architect; Jeanne McDonagh, New Canaan High School Art Department; Tucker Murphy, Town Government; Fatou Niang, protest organizer; Judy Neville, former First Selectman; Lisa Oldham, New Canaan Library; Lauren Patterson, New Canaan Community Foundation; Sharon Prince, Grace Farms Foundation; Jeanna Shepard, photographer; Sheri West, LiveGirl; and Bethany Zaro, Health and Human Services.
100 years later, we celebrate New Canaan’s remarkable women and what they have done for our town. So join in the journey with these women who inspire us, lead us, and, perhaps most of all in this moment in our national history, give us hope.
“Women Leaders in New Canaan” will be produced by NCTV79 and Robert Doran. The series is made possible through the generous support of the New Canaan Community Foundation, the League of Women Voters, The New Canaan Moms, RAND Insurance, The Jim and Dede Bartlett Foundation, and individual donors.
