The American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) has selected Fairfield County and Country Club of Darien (CCD) to host the 2020 Men’s and Women’s APTA National Championships, the Super Bowl of platform tennis.
This will be the second time Fairfield County will be home of the Nationals, having hosted in 2016. CCD will be the center of activity with 34 other area clubs lending their platform tennis courts for early competition rounds.
What is platform tennis? It is an outdoor racquet sport generally played in cool or cold weather, although it has become a year-round sport in some regions. Courts are generally on a raised platform, allowing heaters under the deck to keep the playing surface playable no matter what Mother Nature throws at you. The sport was invented in 1928 in Scarsdale, NY by James Cogswell and Fessenden Blanchard when they were searching for a winter racquet sport close to home. More info about the sport can be found on the APTA website.
